Do we consider ethics in technology?
I was born a daughter a week ago. Since then, I have to admit, I had many sleepless nights and a kind of recalibration of my thoughts takes place. I do not have a new position yet, but the timeline has been extended. Innovations that I consider positive today could become an everyday problem for my descendants. Of course, the long-term consequences of a technology or economy should always be considered. But let's face it, the thought is more abstract. Few of us are able to see beyond their horizon and pursue a timeline beyond our own death.
Here are a few examples from the past, I'll mention it here to illustrate.
1. Pollutant emissions through industrialization. And persistently.
2. Introduction and excessive consumption and use of plastic.
3. Nuclear energy. Here especially the case of the emergence and storage of waste. Not to mention the possible danger potential.
4. Finance and insurance industry. Specifically financial products in the investment sector. e.g. Agricultural products, real estate finance and more.
5. Partly also the Internet, whereby at this point still the long-term aspect is missing. We will see.
These are personal to me, a few cases of innovation in the broad mass that have not been sufficiently considered or controlled. Some of them still lack approaches to solutions today. It is true that a revolution is fast, but her consequences can only be observed long after her. Even if everything seems necessary and right at the time of the upheaval, this does not have to be the case later. We are learning by doing although we should learn by simulation and observation. So far, it looks like we could just stuff the holes we created. Let's see how we can do it with the climate, I'm slightly optimistic.
But let us return to the present time. The innovations today are not nuclear energy or the introduction of plastic. Today it's about:
2. Artificial intelligence.
3. Genetic Modification
4. Block chain.
All very exciting areas and for some I can be very enthusiastic.I have found that, projects that I can understand and whose added value is obvious, scare me at the same time. Watch this video.
I want such a thing. At the same time I ask myself what it is capable of in the wrong hands. Blockchain is another technology that can be used properly to add value. But thought differently, can also become a prison.
A knife can be cut into bread or used to kill. The user is crucial.
At the end we decide what we use the tool for. But the tools are getting more and more complicated. And as I noted above, we are currently tending to ignore the long-term consequences of the revolution.
I do not want to prevent the innovation, quite the opposite. I'm just not sure if we're thinking enough about what we're doing. A technical ethics commission is interesting I think, as there are contracts for genetic manipulation.
The whole thing is just food for thought, have fun with it.

Congratulations on your daughter's birth
>>shinobu:: my concern is the user. is he wise enough to use the technology for his benefit. The process is unstoppable, I just want more reflection. Thank you.
thank you, @all
Congratulations on the birth of a new life your daughter!
Congratulations on your new little family member!
I think that should not impede the development of technology. I think that the future of children including us will develop by appropriately using these technologies. Have a good day.
